Science Building One

This project was done in an academic design studio over the course of six weeks in conjunction with one other cohort, Sahara Defrees. My role was to design the second floor of the building as well as to draft our ideas in Revit. The following is the concept design presentation that was presented at the end of the six weeks.

Mapping As Process

During this exercise, I examined a number of historical maps. I looked at maps ranging from early European cartography to ancient Indigenous cartography. I noticed that the similarity between each of the mapping styles was that the map was a medium to convey the location of a resource or threat to another person. Each map employed iconography to symbolize various things--a resource point for food, a location of an enemy, or a path to another location. I also recognized how often we use iconography as representation today. I think a great example of this would be the use of emojis and .gifs during text messaging. These icons convey emotion or humor in an otherwise stagnant form of communication. This is why I chose to convey this map in the medium of .gif graphics. I detail the ways in which I have experienced and learned about each of these scientific subjects.
